WOOD YOU? Continued.... Two stones down the trail, he heard a groan and was a bit alarmed as the woods were full of bear, and twilight had settled in. The sky held only a handful of stars, and he suddenly scolded himself for not bringing along some light for the path. "Over here.....I'm caught....." a deep voice eased out, sounding as if they were experiencing a lot of pain. Jack reacted swiftly, racing towards the voice. His foot connected with a log, stopping him dead in his tracks. "You okay?" the voice from the ground inquired. Jack recovered quickly, easing out, "Yeah, just fine. What's wrong, buddy? Fallen log got ya trapped?"
"Yes....I cannot move." "I'll have ya fixed up in a jiffy," Jack promised, reaching down and lifting the log almost effortlessly. The stranger stood with effort, but Jack couldn't quite make him out in the curtain of darkness. "Ya okay, buddy?" "Yes, oh yes," the stranger eased out, sounding quite relieved. "And now, I must repay you for your kindness-" "Nah, nothing is necessary, buddy. Just glad that you're okay," Jack eased out, delivering a chuckle. He really liked the stranger; nice guy. Most would have said 'thanks' and left it at that. "I wish you'd allow me to repay you -" "And I wish that you'd forget it, buddy! Really, I was glad to be of help. It's been the high point of my camping trip, actually...." "Hum... You sound a bit thoughtful," the stranger drawled through the darkness, obviously extremely perceptive. "Trouble at the campsite?" "Yeah, BIG trouble," Jack laughed mockingly. "Ya know, I wish I could turn my woman into a light beer and just wash her all away." He paused, quiet for a moment, then continued thoughtfully, "Women can be a lot more trouble than they're worth, ya know that? I should have bought a dog - a tiny damned dog. Lot less trouble." "Hum, I hear you," the stranger eased out, seeming to sympathize with Jack. "Well, thank you for your help and I hope that your evening gets better." Jack returned to the campsite a half hour later to find a light beer resting on the flat rock where Janet had been reading. Beside the beer sat a cute little dog.....
Oh, and as for Jack's noble rescue, he is alive and well, resting on the Planet Yukon...."
